GAFFNEY, South Carolina – Are you a teenager looking for a challenging and exciting summer job? If so you may be interested in working for the National Park Service as a member of the Youth Conservation Corps at Cowpens National Battlefield (NB) and the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) was established as a summer employment program for young men and women between the ages of 15-18 who work, learn, and earn together on projects that further the development and conservation of the natural resources of the United States. One crew will be stationed at Cowpens NB and a second crew will meet at Cowpens NB each day but conduct work off-site at various trail locations up to 45 minutes away.

This job entails outside physical work in temperatures frequently above 90°. Participants may be exposed to insects, poison ivy, and adverse weather. Projects could include debris removal, brush clearing, trail construction, bridge and split rail fence construction, pruning trees, weed eating, and erosion control projects. In addition to these tasks, the parks will provide environmental education and field trips to other parks, such as a multiple-night camping trip to work and visit at other sites.

Youth may pick up applications at the Cowpens National Battlefield Visitor Center from March 22 -April 22 from 9:00 – 5:00, or after March 22 they may download one at Cut off for accepting applications will be 4:00 pm April 22, 2018.  Applicants may return applications to the Visitor Center at 4001 Chesnee Hwy, Gaffney, SC 29341, mail them to Cowpens National Battlefield, 338 New Pleasant Road, Gaffney, SC 28341 or fax them to 864-461-7795.

YCC crew members for both Cowpens National Battlefield and the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail will be randomly drawn from the same pool of applicants. The job is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, paid at minimum wage $7.25 per hour. Applicants MUST be available for work from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, 40 hours a week beginning on June 11th and ending on August 3rd with no unexcused absences or vacations.

Applicants must be a permanent resident of the United States, have a Social Security card, have a desire and willingness to work outside, have no history of serious crime or anti-social behavior that might create safety problems, and possess the ability to work well with others. In addition, the applicant’s parent or legal guardian must consent to the teen working and be able to provide the proper type of work clothing such as long sleeved shirts, jeans and work boots.
