State highway commissioners are not happy with new restrictions put on them under a new law that takes effect this summer. The road funding measure approved by legislators last week includes language that reduces the impact of individual members on South Carolina's Transportation Commission. That includes language removing them from the "day-to-day" operations of the Department of Transportation.

But Commissioner Mike Wooten said he should be able to contact appropriate employees about issues affecting his district.

However, Transportation Secretary Christy Hall said the new requirement is in there because employees feel pressure to act whenever a commissioner calls them.

The commission will be appointed solely by the governor in the future. Currently, members are chosen mostly by legislators in each region of the state.
