Lake Keowee Drowning

Victim thought to be a strong swimmer

The Oconee County Coroner's Office issued the following release Sunday regarding a drowning on Lake Keowee.

At 09:58 am on Sunday morning (June 13th), Oconee E-911 received a call for service for a reported drowning on Lake Keowee at Fall Creek Landing, Salem.

The victim was recovered by a dive team member at approximately 10:30 am in a water depth of 19 feet and approximately 30 – 40 yards off shore. 

The decedent and a friend reportedly were attempting to swim a cove at the time of the incident; the deceased appeared to be swimming back toward their point of entry when he went under. 

EMS was on scene and CPR was initiated; the victim did not respond and was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:54 am. 

The decedent is identified as Dillon Ray Spears, 15, of Wellford (Spartanburg County).

No autopsy will be ordered.

His manner of death will be classified as accidental.
