From the Greenville County Sheriff's Office:

Investigators from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Specialized Investigations Division have arrested 20 year-old, Celeste Paulina Marroquin, and 23 year-old, Ricardo Perez Salas, in connection with a child abuse case that left their 5 month old child with severe oral trauma.

Investigators first received the report from staff at Greenville Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit after child abuse was suspected on a 5 month old child they were treating.

When Investigators arrived on scene they initiated an investigation and discovered that between June 10th and June 11th, Salas was in the residence with the child despite a recent DSS safety-action plan, prohibiting him from contact with the child. At some point the baby began crying, at which point Salas inserted his finger down the throat of the child for an extended period of time, causing severe oral damage. In an attempt to cover up the incident, both Salas and Marroquin held off on getting the child medical attention for several days. On the night of June 13th the child was brought to the hospital where emergency surgery was quickly performed.

The child is currently on a ventilator but is expected to recover. Both Salas and Marroquin were subsequently arrested and transported to the Greenville County Detention Center where they are being held on the listed charges and bonds.

Celeste Paulina Marroquin- 2 counts of Unlawful Neglect of a Child $20,000 bond

Ricardo Perez Salas- Child Abuse
Unlawful Neglect of a Child No bond
