Heroin Arrest in Oconee County

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested and has charged a Seneca man with one count of Trafficking Heroin. 

35 year old Darrell Earl Maxwell, Jr. of Sunshine Drive was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 8:31pm Tuesday on a Temporary Custody Order until the arrest warrant was obtained yesterday. 

As of 2:30pm this morning, Maxwell, Jr. remains in custody at the Detention Center on a $60,000 surety bond.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle during the afternoon hours Tuesday on Wells Highway that had a brake light out.  The vehicle pulled over on Wells Highway near the intersection with Return Church Road.

Maxwell, Jr., who was a passenger in the vehicle, gave officers permission to search his person and then the driver of the vehicle gave the deputies permission to search the vehicle. 

Upon their search of the vehicle, deputies discovered a quantity of narcotics in the passenger seat of the vehicle. 

Narcotics agents from the Sheriff’s Office were notified and the investigation was turned over to them.  The driver was issued a citation for the defective brake light and was released.

According to the arrest warrant, Maxwell, Jr. distributed a quantity of Heroin to an undercover operative working at the direction of the Seneca Police Department on August 10th.  As well on August 14th, Maxwell, Jr. distributed another quantity of Heroin to an undercover operative working at the direction of the Seneca Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office.

According to the arrest warrant, Maxwell, Jr. either distributed and/or had in his possession approximately 5.6 grams of heroin with a street value of around $1,120, according to narcotics agents.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation.
